After decades of spills at a Williams Petroleum Inc oil refinery in the Alaskan Interior, the industrial solvent sulfolane seeped into the town of North Pole’s groundwater, contaminating hundreds of wells and exposing more than 7,000 people. Sulfolane is an emerging contaminant whose health implications have not been widely studied, which makes understanding the health impacts difficult. Compounding the problem, a second plume of PFAS has recently been discovered spreading from the now-shuttered refinery.
